Panel Promotes Consolidation of the Nuclear Weapons Complex




* Community events commemorate the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Sixty years ago on August 6th 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing 140,000 people instantly. Three days later on August 9th, the United States dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki, killing 70,000 more people. This week's CCNS News Update will provide a list of events taking place in Northern New Mexico to commemorate these bombings. In Los Alamos, the birthplace of the atomic bomb and a major nuclear weapons facility, there will be a gathering held at Ashley Pond Park on Saturday August 6th. Events will begin at 8 am with a traditional sackcloth-and-ashes witness hosted by Pax Christi New Mexico. Other events sponsored by the Los Alamos Study Group will continue throughout the day including speakers, music, and workshops on nuclear history and a post-nuclear economy. Buddhist groups from Northern New Mexico will be joining them. In Santa Fe, the Seventh Annual Peace Day Commemoration will be held at the Rail Yard as well as other sites around the city on Friday August 5th and Saturday August 6th. Events on Friday August 5th include an art opening at the Rail Yard at 4:30 pm of installations on the subject of peace along with a series of performances at SITE Santa Fe, entitled "Deep Listening Palace," beginning at 6pm. On Saturday August 6th beginning at 9:30 am there will be a ceremony celebrating the 10th birthday of the Children's Peace Statue at Ghost Ranch in Santa Fe. The ceremony will be followed by a procession to the Rail Yard. Events will continue throughout the day at the Rail Yard with music, speakers, dramatic and dance performances, an artists market and art workshops, including the creation of a community chalk mural. In Albuquerque on Saturday August 6th from 6 to 10 pm there will be an art opening at AC2 Gallery entitled, "Peace Art Show: Art in the Birthplace of the Atomic Bomb." The show investigates the social repercussions on America, and specifically New Mexico, sixty years into the atomic age. The group show opens on August 6th and runs through September 4th.
