I'm attempting to reply to Joan Seaman's query
about scientists opposed to WIPP.

There are a number of scientists who raise serious
concerns about the project.

For example, Lenny Konikow (sp?).
I believe that he presided over one of the National
Academy of Science panels on WIPP.

He wrote that not enough was known about the
hydrology overlying the facility.

That is one of the big problems with the facility.

The WIPP is located in one of the largest regions
of karst in North America.

Karst refers to any terrain where the topography
has been formed cheifly of disolving rock.

As you may know the WIPP is relatively close to
the Carlsbad National Caverns.

Landforms associated with karst include sinkhole,
caves, sinking springs and solution valleys.

All of these features abound in and around the WIPP
site.

Karst terrain is not suitable for the disposal of
any hazardous material because of the likelihood
of rapid transport of these materials to the
accessible environment.

Other scientists who have raised questions about
the suitability of the site are: Dr. David Snow,Ph.D.,
Dr. Richard H. Phillips, Ph. D., Larry Barrows, and
Dr. Roger Anderson.
