SUBJECT: SPECIAL ACCOUNT FOR SUPPORT OF REFERRED AND
INDIGENT PATIENTS STUDIED IN HUMAN APPLICATION
PROGRAM
SYMBOL: H-4
We have been informed by the Business Office that the
5,OOO.OO allocated to our "Human Applications of
Liquid scintillometry" program is about expended. I
would like to request that this fund be renewed,
since it has been very helpful to us in obtaining
from adjacent areas some extreme pathologic cases
which were not available locally and which have aided
materially in establishing the extreme variations in
our tests.
An accounting of these cases has been made in the
accompanying table. In addition to these 23 cases, 4
weight lifters from California were studied by E. C,
Anderson. The total cost was $4,135.04, with an
average cost per case of $l53.l5. Exclusive of the
weight lifters, there were 543 study days involved,
each study lasting an average of 24 days and having
an average cost per day of $16.08. I believe these
figures compare well with the projected ones given in
your original proposal to Dr. Dunham of October 21,
1958. Travel expenses did not, however, prove to be a
large item, since the source of these patients was:
Santa Fe 8, Espa–ola 3, Cundiyo 3, Las Tablas 2, El
Rito 2, Taos 2, Questa 1, and Abilene 1.
