The sates is now basically in monitored retrievable storage (MRS) at sites across the US. And yes, a breakthrough in how this stuff might be treated may be around the corner. Or the next. But there is no indication that it will be here any time soon.
I maintain that it would be immoral of our generation to foist this problem on future generations, and count on them to come up with a fix to the problem. That has already happened with the last generation -- here we are cleaning up after them. Is it fair to say to our kids, "Well, we couldn't come up with any magic bullet, so you deal with it." I don't think so. Perhaps we could come up with a better MRS system, like Yucca Mountain, but only at tremendous cost and still with no final disposition. Then, we are passing both the cost and the waste on to future generations.
WIPP is a sound facility. It's really the best in the world -- really. We should be happy to have it! I don't want to tell my kids, "We had a great facility but were never allowed to use it because it was not perfect. So now it's your problem." There is no perfect. This is as good as it gets. Let's get this crap undergroudn where it belongs and get on with preventing future generation of more of it. These are two separate problems.
