Joan,

Its not valid to evaluate proposed waste sites such as WIPP and Yucca mountain to past DOE practices at such places as Hanford and Rocky Flats. I have NEVER, on this page, defended DOE's past.

Furthermore, I understand that DOE has a credibility problem - deservidly so. But WIPP and Yucca mountain cannot be compared to previous DOE waste disposal sites. And DOE is not being given carte blanche to operate with out external review. The NRC, the EPA, the State of Nevada, the State of New Mexico, and in Hanford the State of Washington and the Yakima indians, are all activly involved in oversight of DOE waste clean up and repository programs. For example, in New Mexico the State's oversight of WIPP is facilitated thought the NM Environmental Evaluation Group. And believe me, the EEG is no DOE lap dog. If there are scientists and engineers who have concerns regarding WIPP, the EEG will undoubtly investigate such issue. If you are interested in finding more about the EEG, you can call them at 505-828-1003.

Tim
